Jobs for December

With a festive winter now in full swing, please find below a list of some of the gardening jobs still to do throughout December.

  • Once deciduous plants and climbers have been cleared, repair garden structures.
  • Clear fallen leaves from the lawn to let the light in and prevent dead patches appearing.
  • Keep, borders and paths clear of leaves.
  • Dig over new borders.
  • Plant evergreen shrubs if conditions are dry.
  • Plant bare-root roses, trees and shrubs.
  • Check climbers are securely attached to their supports.
  • Net your pond to keep the water clear of leaves.
  • Order seed catalogues to prepare for sowing next year. Reflect on what plants worked well this year, to help with design ideas.
  • Prune bush roses down by half to avoid roots damage in winter winds.
  • Clear the remains of old crops in vegetable patches.
  • Check tree ties and stakes to ensure that trees are still secure following strong autumn winds. Tighten or loosen ties if necessary.
  • Make sure your log store is stocked up ready for evenings in front of the fire.
  • Buy a Bethwins Christmas gift voucher for a friend or family member.
