Jobs for January

With a New Year upon us, it is time to start preparing the garden for the spring and summer months to come. Please find below a list of some of the gardening jobs to do throughout January.
- Clear fallen leaves from the lawn to let the light in and prevent dead patches appearing.
- Keep, borders and paths clear of leaves.
- Check climbers are securely attached to their supports.
- Make sure the nets over your pond are tight to keep the water clear of leaves.
- Clear the remains of old crops in vegetable patches.
- Keep your log store stocked up to ensure your fire wood does not run out when you need it most.
- Prune rose bushes now whilst they are dormant. Cut back to just above a bud and remove any crossing or dead branches.
- Avoid walking on your lawn when it is covered in heavy frost or snow, as this will damage the grass beneath.
- Prune your apple trees and pear trees whilst they are dormant over the winter months
- Cut back any old foliage from ornamental grasses before new growth begins.
- Keep your bird feeders topped up
- Brush heavy snow of off hedges and conifers to prevent the branches from snapping out under its weight.
- Shred your Christmas tree and add it to compost bins.
- Wash and clean the patio, and paving by scrubbing with a broom or blasting with a pressure washer.
